The Met just opened a new door

A new city partnership will distribute 70,000 free Metropolitan Opera tickets this season through a monthly lottery for eligible New Yorkers.

By New York by Invitation · Sept. 25, 2026

New Yorkers who have not purchased a Metropolitan Opera ticket since 2019 can now enter a monthly lottery for free seats. The city and the Met announced Opera for All on Sept. 24, with 70,000 tickets planned for the 2026 to 2027 season and seats available throughout the house except standing room.

The useful number is 10,000. That is how many tickets the Met says it will release each month this season. Entry is available through the Met website or app, and the announcement names Macbeth, Lincoln in the Bardo and La Bohème among this season's productions.

This is not a rush line or a last minute cancellation list. It is a lottery, so the elegant approach is to enter before building an evening around it. If selected, let the performance set the date and keep dinner simple enough that the curtain remains the main event.

Eligibility is broader than first time attendance alone. According to the city, a New Yorker qualifies if they have not purchased a Met Opera ticket since 2019. The program is confirmed and the current lottery entry page is live, but entry does not guarantee tickets.

The most interesting part may be where the seats are located. The announcement says they will be drawn from every section of the Metropolitan Opera House except standing room. A free ticket, in other words, does not automatically mean the view from the edge of the room.

For anyone who has walked through Lincoln Center without going inside the opera house, this is a practical invitation. Enter the lottery, choose curiosity over expertise and save the formal opera education for after the first overture.

Planning questions

Who is eligible for the Met Opera ticket lottery?

The city’s Opera for All announcement says New Yorkers qualify if they have not purchased a Metropolitan Opera ticket since 2019. That includes people returning after a long absence, rather than only first time visitors. Consult the official entry page for the current terms.

How do I enter Opera for All?

Enter through the Metropolitan Opera’s official Opera for All page or app. The program uses a monthly lottery, so submitting an entry does not guarantee tickets. Follow the official instructions for each release before arranging dinner or travel around a performance.

How many free tickets are planned?

The city and the Met announced 70,000 tickets for the 2026 to 2027 season, with 10,000 planned each month. The announcement says seats come from every section of the opera house except standing room. Check the current release for the performances available.
