Brancusi turns MoMA’s sixth floor into a studio
A newly opened exhibition brings rare loans from the artist’s Paris workshop into conversation with MoMA’s own collection.
Brancusi: The Artist and His Studio opened at the Museum of Modern Art on Sunday, Oct. 25, and remains on view through Feb. 27, 2027. The exhibition fills the sixth floor with sculpture, photography, film, furniture, tools and archival material.

The useful idea is in the title. This is not simply a row of polished objects. MoMA has organized the show around Constantin Brancusi’s Paris studio, where he lived, worked, received visitors and arranged his sculpture for more than four decades.
Rare loans from Centre Pompidou’s Atelier Brancusi give the New York presentation unusual weight. The Paris installation is closed during the Centre Pompidou renovation, so works and studio material that seldom travel can meet MoMA’s own Brancusi collection and several local loans.
Look closely at the supports. Brancusi treated bases, furniture and the space around a sculpture as part of the work rather than neutral equipment. That makes the show a lesson in placement as much as form. A pedestal can redirect the eye. A repeated shape can change when its neighbors change.
The exhibition photograph above shows Brancusi in his studio around 1934 with several works, including Fish and Leda. It is an archival view supplied by MoMA for coverage of the current exhibition, not a photograph of the finished sixth floor installation.
A focused visit can begin with the studio photographs, then move between related sculptures and their bases. MoMA also offers a free audio guide and a self guided digital itinerary. Both can help without turning the room into a checklist.
MoMA is at 11 W. 53rd St. The exhibition is included with museum admission. Check the official visit page for current hours and ticket options before leaving, especially if a Friday evening or holiday week is part of the plan.
