At the Whitney, a small exhibition makes room for the weather

Ten watercolors offer a focused autumn museum plan, with an opening this Thursday and a ticketed free evening on Friday.

Charles Burchfield: Elemental opens at the Whitney Museum of American Art on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026. The exhibition brings together ten works from the museum’s collection, made between 1916 and 1960, and is scheduled to continue into spring 2027. The museum has not announced an exact closing date.

A small exhibition invites a different kind of visit. Instead of trying to cover an entire museum, choose a handful of pictures and give them enough time to become more than images on a wall. Burchfield’s landscapes offer a particularly good reason to try it: their subject is the familiar world, but their shapes make weather and vegetation feel charged with movement.

Consider Cricket Chorus in the Arbor, the 1917 watercolor pictured here and one of the works named in the exhibition announcement. Dark marks curl and pulse through the foliage; a path and wooden structure provide something firmer to follow. Look first for where the picture lets the eye rest, then for the places that disturb that rest. That simple comparison gives a companion something more interesting to discuss than whether a painting is beautiful.

The show’s span also makes comparison a useful way in. Begin with an early work, select a later one and notice how the spaces between things change. There is no need to turn the visit into a survey of the artist’s entire career. A clear memory of two pictures is a more satisfying souvenir than a hurried photograph of every label.

For an opening day visit, the museum lists Thursday hours of 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Standard adult admission is $30, with other admission categories listed on the museum’s visit page. Friday, Oct. 23, offers another route: Free Friday Nights runs from 5 to 10 p.m. Tickets are still required and capacity is limited. Reserve through the Whitney before arranging the rest of the evening.

The address is 99 Gansevoort St. Leave a little unassigned time after the galleries rather than stacking another reservation tightly against the visit. An exhibition about paying attention to the natural world deserves an exit that allows you to notice the actual sky.
