A Tiffany room opens its doors in Lower Manhattan

Open House New York offers a Saturday inside a room usually closed to the public. The ceiling alone deserves a pause.

The Collector’s Office at the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House will open for free visits Saturday, Oct. 17, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during Open House New York. No ticket is required. At 1 Bowling Green, the room offers a particular pleasure: access to an elaborate interior that is usually closed to the public.

White oak paneling designed by Tiffany Studios, seaport portraits and a gilded coffered ceiling give the office its character. The photograph above shows the ceiling’s repeating shapes and carved ornament during a 2015 visit. It is a useful introduction to the scale of attention the room invites. Looking up is part of the itinerary.

Begin with the ceiling, then bring your gaze down to the walls. Notice how repetition holds the room together and how the ornament changes when it meets a corner or an opening. An architectural visit becomes more interesting when it has a question: how does a working office turn administration into a public statement?

The setting gives that question some weight. Cass Gilbert’s custom house was completed in 1907, when the building expressed the importance of New York’s port. It became home to the National Museum of the American Indian’s George Gustav Heye Center in 1994. The same address now contains a museum devoted to Native histories and living cultures, alongside the architectural record of an earlier federal institution.

Keep those two subjects distinct while giving both time. The office is a historic room, not a substitute for the museum’s exhibitions. A considered visit can begin with the special opening and continue with one gallery, allowing the building’s original purpose and its current cultural role to be understood on their own terms.

The museum will offer informal tours about the office’s architecture and history, with ongoing engagement and a finding activity listed for Saturday. Treat the 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. window as the opening period rather than a promise of a tour starting at any particular minute. Open House New York flags expected lines. Leave space in the day for entry and conversation.

A metal detector and bag search are required. The ground floor entrance is accessible to wheelchairs, and the organizer lists the event as wheelchair accessible. Avoid large belongings, selfie sticks and tripods. Check the official listing and museum visitor guidance again before traveling, since the festival publishes changes as they occur.

This is a good occasion to resist the impulse to collect buildings. Choose the room, give its surfaces your attention and let the rest of Lower Manhattan remain a possibility. One interior, understood carefully, can make a more lasting city afternoon than a crowded list of addresses.
