Eckhaus Latta opens a new Lower East Side epicenter

The move is more than a change of shop window. Mike Eckhaus and Zoe Latta have put retail, their New York design studio, archival storage, photography and stock in one address. Vogue reports that the public store occupies 940 square feet, with a separate 700 square foot studio behind it.

That arrangement makes the store a useful expression of how an independent label works. Clothes hang from rails suspended overhead. Pale yellow walls and creamy gray floors keep the room light, while art pieces by Sophie Stone and furniture selected by David Lê make the interior feel assembled through collaboration rather than imposed by a retail formula.

The silver painted facade keeps the weathered character of the building instead of erasing it. That choice suits Ludlow Street, where polished arrivals sit beside older tenements and small storefronts.
