The Bowery has a past worth making time for
The New Museum turns its own street into the subject of The Bowery: Devil’s Mile, on view through Jan. 31, 2027.
The New Museum is giving the Bowery an appointment with its own history. The Bowery: Devil’s Mile opened Sept. 24 and runs through Jan. 31, 2027, at 235 Bowery. Its subject is the street outside the museum, giving an afternoon of art an unusually immediate connection to the walk that follows.

The museum describes the exhibition as a survey of 400 years of cultural history. That makes the appeal larger than nostalgia. A familiar street can become difficult to read when the newest storefront is the only thing receiving attention. This exhibition offers a reason to slow down and consider what a place carries forward, rather than treating every visit as a search for its next opening.
Build the outing around that idea. See the exhibition first, then leave a little time for the surrounding blocks. The walk need not turn into a checklist of historic addresses. Let it be a chance to notice scale, street life and the way different uses sit beside one another. The museum supplies the subject; the neighborhood gives you somewhere to keep thinking about it.
There is also a timely evening option. The New Museum lists its Visionaries conversation with writer Lucy Sante and Director Emeritus Lisa Phillips for Oct. 7, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sante’s work on photography, memory and New York makes that conversation a related cultural plan. Check the separate event page for tickets and remaining availability before arranging your evening around it.
For the exhibition, start with the official listing and visiting page below. Confirm admission and the day’s gallery hours before traveling, and treat an evening program as a separate booking. One exhibition and an unhurried walk are enough to give the afternoon a shape. Dinner can wait until you know how long you want to stay.
