Things to do this weekend in New York City
Oct. 16 to 18, 2026: Five cultural plans, from a Tiffany interior and Rockefeller Center gardens to a Friday evening with Lichtenstein.
New York City’s weekend of Oct. 16 through 18 has a useful organizing principle: give the rare opening priority, then fit the longer running exhibition around it. Open House New York brings special access to a Tiffany interior on Saturday and Rockefeller Center’s rooftop gardens on Sunday. The Whitney’s new Lichtenstein exhibition makes a natural Friday evening anchor.

These are five choices, not an instruction to cross Manhattan five times. A Lower Manhattan Saturday and a Midtown Sunday have different rhythms. Choose the address that matters most, allow for queues and let a meal or a walk supply the rest of the day.
The theater offer ends Sunday, while the two museum exhibitions continue well beyond this weekend. Book the performance before dinner. For the free architectural visits, check the festival updates before leaving home: no ticket does not mean no waiting.
The photograph above shows Rockefeller Center at street level. The pictures with each stop distinguish the actual exhibition or interior from archival venue views and neighborhood settings.
1. Begin Friday with Lichtenstein at the Whitney

Like New has just opened on the fifth floor. Give the paintings time to unsettle the easy assumption that Pop is only a familiar style. A useful way into the show is to compare an image that seems instantly legible with one that refuses to resolve so quickly. Friday evening lets the visit begin after work rather than compete with Saturday’s special openings.

Official Friday admission and ticket booking2. Look up inside the Collector’s Office

The normally closed room at the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House opens for OHNY visits on Saturday. Tiffany Studios designed its white oak paneling, while the gilded ceiling makes the office feel like an argument about the importance of public administration. Look at the corners and transitions as carefully as the central ornament. The museum offers informal engagement rather than a single tour departure to chase.

The 610 and 620 Loft & Garden spaces open for one Sunday afternoon. The pleasure is a change of scale: Midtown’s vertical city gives way to lawns, planting and a view toward St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Treat the gardens as the reason to visit, not a quick prelude to another observation deck. This is special festival access to spaces usually used for private events.

NYC Off Broadway Week reaches its final weekend with two for one tickets to eligible performances. Start with a production that interests you, then check the exact performance and seats included in the offer. A discount is useful when it helps you make a particular evening happen, not when it sends you to a show chosen only for the arithmetic.

Offer ends Sunday, Oct. 18. Prices, curtain times, venues and availability vary by production. Confirm the theater address on the booking page.

You Should Be Dancing: New York, 1976 and Beyond at The New York Historical follows punk, disco and hip hop through a city in financial difficulty and creative motion. Let it be a focused museum visit rather than a soundtrack to a rushed circuit. Pairing it with a walk beside Central Park keeps the conversation in the neighborhood.

170 Central Park West at West 77th Street. Exhibition through April 4, 2027. Check the museum’s current visitor page for weekend hours, admission and tickets.
